Food Technology  – Key Stage 3

As a department we feel preparing the pupils for adult life is very important and that having the opportunity to study Food Technology  has a vital part to play in preparing them for adult life.

Our curriculum is designed with the following aims:

  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and health.
  • Cook a repertoire of sweet and savoury dishes so that they are able to feed themselves and others a healthy and varied diet.
  • Become competent in a range of cooking techniques for example, selecting and preparing ingredients; using utensils and electrical equipment; applying heat in different ways; using awareness of taste, texture and smell to decide how to season dishes and combine ingredients; adapting and using their own recipes.
  • Understand the source, seasonality and characteristics of a range of ingredients.

Some of the tools and equipment that they will use will include – the oven, microwave, hob, hand whisk, food blender, bread maker, food processor, food steamer, grill, knives, electric scales.

The pupils will then have the opportunity to undertake Hospitality and Catering Level ½ in Year 10/11.
