Food Technology & Resistant Materials Key Stage 3

Throughout the duration of KS3 pupils will embark on a journey through two disciplines of Technology. Pupils will study Food Technology and Resistant Materials. Pupils will spend approximately 2 lessons (1 hour 30 minutes) in the two areas each week.

Food Technology and Resistant Materials

These subjects prepare pupils to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. The pupils learn to think creatively and intervene to improve the quality of life, solving problems as individuals and members of a team.  It enables them to identify needs and opportunities and to respond by developing ideas, and eventually making products. Through their studies they will combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as functions and industrial practices. By studying these subjects pupils develop confidence in using practical skills and they apply their creative thinking and learn to innovate.

All the pupils in KS3 will be taught the basic principles of kitchen and workshop health and safety enabling them to use and develop their knowledge and understanding in using a range of tools and equipment.

Food Technology

Some of the tools and equipment that they will use will include – the oven, microwave, hob, hand whisk, food blender, bread maker, food processor, grill, knives, electric scales.

Resistant Materials

Some of the tools and equipment that they will use will include – the coping saw, screw driver, files, junior hacksaw, electric hand drill, bench drill, fretsaws, chisels, marking gauge, tri square, strip heater.
