CEDARS Short Stay School

Mathematics

At CEDARS Short Stay School, Mathematics supports pupils to build confidence, resilience, and problem‑solving skills that are essential for everyday life and future pathways. The curriculum is designed to meet pupils at their starting points and ensure all learners can make progress.

Mathematics is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that develops fluency, reasoning, and problem‑solving. Teaching follows a mastery approach, enabling pupils to develop a secure understanding of concepts and apply their knowledge in a range of contexts. Lessons highlight real‑world applications of Maths and make links with learning across the wider curriculum.

In Years 7 and 8, all pupils follow the same curriculum to ensure a smooth transition from primary school and establish strong foundations. In Years 9, 10 and 11, pupils are grouped appropriately and follow either a Foundation or Higher pathway, ensuring both support and challenge.

Pupils’ understanding is monitored through regular assessment, including mini unit tests and larger assessments that require recall of prior learning. Our aim is for pupils to leave CEDARS with the confidence and skills to apply Mathematics successfully in education, employment, and everyday life.
