Key Stage 3 Digital Skills Curriculum

Curriculum Intent

The Key Stage 3 Digital Skills curriculum is designed specifically for learners in a PRU setting to provide a structured reintroduction to computing and ICT. Students often arrive with disrupted education and varied digital experience. The curriculum therefore aims to:

  • re-engage pupils with practical and meaningful learning
  • develop confidence and independence in using technology
  • close gaps in prior ICT knowledge
  • support literacy, creativity, and communication skills
  • prepare students for progression into Key Stage 4 accredited Digital Skills

Students will learn through the following key topics:

  • Microsoft Word – creating, formatting, and editing professional documents
  • Microsoft PowerPoint – designing clear and engaging presentations
  • Computer Crime and Cyber Security – understanding online risks, digital ethics, and the impact of computer misuse
  • Spreadsheet Design – using Microsoft Excel to organise data and perform calculations
  • Artificial Intelligence – exploring how AI works and how it is applied in everyday technologies

The curriculum encourages responsible digital citizenship and supports access to learning across all subjects.

Curriculum Implementation

Digital Skills at Key Stage 3 are implemented through carefully sequenced, supportive, and practical lessons delivered in ICT classrooms. Teaching focuses on small-step skill development with clear routines that meet SEMH and additional learning needs.

Implementation includes:

  • structured hands-on activities using Microsoft Office software
  • differentiated tasks matched to individual starting points
  • explicit teacher modelling and guided practice
